- First thing to do is know if the movie you want has a DVD released already. If not, chances are the movie you're downloading has a poor videocam quality; the so-called 'pirated copy.' Visit sites that enumerate DVD movies of the year, summer releases, etc. Otherwise, expect the copy you're getting is truly of poor quality.
- Make sure that your file-sharing program can search through all the top peer-to-peer (P2P) networks out there: ed2k (e-donkey), gnutella, gnutella2, bittorrents, fasttrack. I know of one program that can connect to three networks: Shareaza. However, there are individual clients you can use.
- You can also use IRC networks or the Usenet networks. The advantage of these networks is that download speed is maximized as soon as transfer begins; unlike P2P where speed depends on the number of peers sharing and their upload speeds.
- In P2P, ed2k has volumes of movies to download but transfer start-up is extremely slow as queues are very long. Gnutella and Gnutella2 are popular with music downloads.
- You should pick available files that has the most sources in P2P, you don't want transfers to suddenly stop or slow down when sources begin to dwindle. That's why bittorent is becoming more popular since sharing in torrents is a two-way process; you upload what you download and it is usually centered only on the intended file or a set of related files.
- Avoid video clips that are wmv-formatted. They require licenses to view most of the time.
- Always preview the movie or a sample of it before continuing the download process. You don't want to waste hours and hours only to find out that it's in French or completely the wrong movie.
- Best movie formats are in the DIVX, XVID formats. They are so DVD-like. Real Media formats are also good (rm, ram, rmvb).
- Make sure you have the proper video codecs (compression-depression) so you can play the movie.
- After downloading, grab a popcorn, snuggle up to your woman and enjoy the movie.
Try to visit Downloaded a movie and don't know what CAM/TS/TC/SCR means?
