A few days ago, I paid my last respects to one of my drinking buddies, Wilfredo Severo Sr., father of my college bud, Amby. It is yet but another end to a noble man whose zest for life or "joie de vivre" is unparalleled.
"Tito," a very respectable citizen of Malabon where he lived all his life would always be there with us during late night activities of drinking until the wee hours; and would find ourselves drinking for some more as soon as we wake up in the afternoon.
Most memorable were the days when we were doing our thesis. With just one snap of his fingers, all the denizens around would be prompt on his commands; either to buy our cervezas or a trip to the nearest fishport for huge tuna. (The town of Malabon, just the same with Navotas, is a major distribution point for fish in the whole Metro Manila)
As a result, the money we pooled and earmarked for the revelry would be untouched until the next day, sometimes never to be spent. Why, Tito would even invite a small orchestra for our musical pleasure on some nights. Coupled with "Tita's" cooking; and you've got the perfect recipe for a party. And yeah, they were always very bacchanal.
College life was good to us. I was often excited with anticipation with the thought of every scheduled occasion since I knew it would be another moment of fun for the guys. Amby's place was always "the place" for wine, good food, and song.
College life ended and I started working already, however I still enjoy Tito's company once in a while and I made it a point to attend upon his invitation. Anyway, it always was great to be with his company, especially along with his older set of friends.
A few years ago when I made a rare visit, he told me that he missed the times when Amby and I (along with Acop) were still in college. I missed those times too, I said. That was the last time I saw Tito alive.
On the night I went to his wake, we sang his favorite tunes on Amby's videoke player. On the way home, I thought of the good times. Those times will forever be etched in my memory.
